Botox® Injection Treatments

For Youthful, Healthy-Looking Skin

As we age, our skin starts to lose collagen, oils, and elasticity. This process can lead to wrinkles, sagging, and drooping of the skin. Lines and wrinkles also become more pronounced in facial areas where frequent movements occur.

Botulinum toxin injections (Botox®, Xeomin®, Dysport®) relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles and help create firmer, smoother skin by improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. FDA approves these injections for use on forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, crows feet, and other facial areas. Botox® can also treat overactive sweating called hyperhidrosis, migraine headaches, and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction.

Who is a candidate for Botox® injection treatments?

Patients who are looking to address fine lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows, near the outer eyes (called “crow’s feet”), and the vertical lines around the mouth (called “smoker’s lines” or “marionette lines”) can benefit from a Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport® treatment. By applying Botox to tensed muscles to relax them, the skin is smoothed out safely and effectively for a more youthful appearance.

At Pure Medical Spa, we tailor each treatment to the individual patient and their particular needs. To discuss your own unique aesthetic goals and get a personalized treatment plan, contact us today.

What age should I start getting Botox®?

Patients of any age can receive Botox. It all depends on their desired appearance, the current condition of their skin, and what other applications it may be used for. In fact, pediatric patients treated with Botox have shown improvement in limb spasticity.

What is in Botox® cosmetic injections?

“Botulinum toxin type A,” also known as “OnabotulinumtoxinA,” is a purified form of botulinum toxin. It is used to block acetylcholine release in cosmetic applications. This toxin is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is perfectly safe in small, controlled doses.

How does a botulinum toxin injection work?

As we use the muscles in our face over and over, they become toned beneath our skin and wrinkles may form above them. The botulinum toxin acts as a neurotoxin. After binding to the nerve ending at the point where a nerve joins a muscle, it then blocks the release of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter. This prevents the muscle from contracting and thus prevents wrinkles from forming.

In addition to being a great cosmetic treatment, botulinum toxin can also be used in the treatment of medical conditions like excessive sweating, overactive bladder/urinary incontinence, cervical dystonia neck pain, muscle spasms and eye twitching, limb spasticity, and chronic migraine headaches.

What’s the recovery time for Botox® injections?

Botox treatment takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and there’s virtually no downtime. Most patients are able to resume their normal routines immediately, although it can take approximately 7 to 14 days for the results of Botox to fully appear. Some adult patients treated with Botox may experience temporary redness, soreness, or bruising at the injection site, but this is easily remedied with ice packs.

For the first 48 hours after treatment:

  • Avoid makeup, caffeine, and alcohol
  • Do not exercise
  • Do not touch, rub, or sleep on your face

Patients on blood thinners are at higher risk for bruising. If you experience other symptoms or signs of an upper respiratory tract infection, inform your doctor right away.

How long does Botox® last?

Some patients see results immediately, although it can take approximately 7 to 14 days for Botox to become completely active and for results to appear.

The effects of Botox typically last for three to six months. As a repeatable treatment, it is safe to get Botox as often as necessary to maintain an improved appearance. We recommend keeping appointments every three to four months to maintain your results.
